Flores wants winning and development to go hand in hand

While advancing from the first round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Championship is the main goal, newly appointed Head Coach of the Cayman Islands Women’s National Team Ruben Flores is using the international outing to measure development and progress of the women’s game.

The Cayman Islands will contest Group three of the competition against host Turks and Caicos, St Kitts & Nevis and Bermuda. Flores who has coached club football in his native Mexico and Canada, has winning and advancing to the final round in Trinidad and Tobago on his mind, but also important to him is development.

Flores told Cayman Football.com “This tournament is a milestone for female football in the Caribbean and a tangible way to judge development and success.

He added “we are trying to compete and give the new generations a good reputation as a country and an outlet for a brighter future.”

With an eye on the future, ten players that competed for the Cayman Islands in the CONCACAF Under 20 World Cup qualifiers in January, were selected for the senior women’s team. They join experienced international Shenel Gall, the first Caymanian woman to play professionally overseas, and University of West Florida sophomore midfielder Shanice Monteith.

“It is a great experience for the players not only to compete internationally but against other Caribbean countries. This tournament is a good measurement for some countries like ours to reinforce the work that has been done to develop this female athletes. ‎It gives also the opportunity to showcase the local talent and to strive for something for the younger athletes.”

Cayman open the competition against St Kitts and Nevis on Friday.
