GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands – Captain Matthew Suberan leads a well prepared Under 20 Men’s National Team to the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Men’s Under 20 Group 5 qualifiers in Curacao.
The team departed Grand Cayman on Monday, 28th July, for Willemstad, to compete against the home team, Anguilla and St Kitts and Nevis.
“We have had a good preparation period and our expectation is to advance to the second phase,” said Director of National Teams, Renard Moxam.
The national team needs to win the group in order to advance to the final round, scheduled for September in Trinidad and Tobago.
“We have had a good chance to prepare properly. Now it is work time over the next couple days to get them prepared for the match days,” Moxam added.
“I would like to congratulate the coaching and administrative staff. They have done a good job with the team’s preparation, said Cayman Islands Football Association’s First Vice President, Bruce Blake.
Blake added “This team is one of the best under 20 teams that we have produced in a while, I wish them all the best.”
Looking ahead to the future, Blake confirmed that the under 20 men’s team is the mainstay of the platform to rebuild the senior men’s national programme.
Blake said, “This team will form the nucleus of our senior national team, going forward.” He continued, “With Olympic and World Cup qualifying next year, this is the team that will compete in those tournaments.”
Midfielder Matthew Suberan leads to national team and said when the team departed, “I’m very excited to lead the team and my country and I think we can do well.”
Suberan who plays for Cayman Athletic added, “We had four weeks of hard work for sure, I have confidence we can do well in the group.
Matches will be played at the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Curacao with the winner advancing to face Aruba, Haiti, Cuba and Dominican Republic in Trinidad and Tobago in September.
